About us

What is Functional Medicine?

At Atlanta Functional Medicine, our providers focus on a patient-centered approach, as opposed to a disease-centered approach. Functional medicine is a comprehensive investigation of all body systems. Functional medicine looks at the various organs and systems of the body as parts of a larger context, which allow our physicians to identify underlying causes of diseases.

A functional medicine approach can make connections between all symptoms, which initially can seem unrelated.

At your first appointment, we take a comprehensive medical history and lifestyle assessment to obtain a complete picture of your health. We use this assessment to identify the root cause(s) of the illness, including triggers such as poor nutrition, stress, toxins, allergens, genetics and your microbiome (the bacteria living in and on your body). Once we identify the triggers, we can customize a healthy holistic living plan for you.

Your plan will address many aspects of your life, from physical needs such as nutrition, exercise, and sleep, to mental and emotional stressors related to social, work, and community life. Here at Atlanta Functional Medicine, the focus is not on asking “What drug matches up with this disease?” Rather, we ask the vital questions that very few conventional doctors ask - “Why do you have this problem in the first place?”, “Why has function been lost?”, and “What can we do to restore function?” In other words, Functional Medicine looks to find the root cause or mechanism involved with any loss of function, which ultimately reveals why a set of symptoms appear in the first place, or why the patient has a particular disease label.
